    SKYBURST FAQ

How do I obtain the best Signal Strength?

What if I cannot obtain a signal?

What if I can obtain the required Signal Strength but the Modem is too far from my computer?

Do I need to install the provided software?

How can I make my Modem portable?

What are the possible Authentication Errors?

What does Wrong Password and Username means?

What does " Maximun Concurrent Season " means?

What does " Maximum Debt Reached " means?

What does " Access Denied " means?

My location is having inconsistent signal quality and signal strength. I am thinking of installing an external antenna to resolve the problem.

Is the Modem able to connect to an external antenna? Does InternetGhana have it
    as an optional item?

What types of interference could affect my Skyburst Modem performance?

Where can I find some info on the security level for the product? I am afraid of hackers

Will the Skyburst modem work with Windows XP?

Does the skyburst modem allow roaming between adjacent and non adjacent Skyburst cells? (If so, please explain how...hot spots?)

Is there any problem with having an anti-virus program running at the same time you install the Ripwave Monitor or Navini Diagnostics application?

    What is DSL?

    A. DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It refers to technology and equipment used on a normal telephone line to provide multi-channel high-speed Internet access.

    B. Asymmetric DSL is the transmission of multiple data channels at different capacities. The signal going upstream is at a lower frequency and has less data-carrying capacity than the signal going downstream.

For example. A 256/64 speed ADSL line has a maximum download speed of 256 Kbps, and a maximum upload speed of 64 Kbps.

What is the difference between ADSL and ISDN?

ISDN is a digital service supporting speeds of 64K and 128K in it's basic configuration. ADSL is many times faster than ISDN, and for most Internet-related applications, ADSL is a better choice. ADSL is also significantly cheaper than ISDN.

Do I need to install a new phone line?

No. An additional phone line is not necessary and you will be able to use the same line to talk and browse the internet at the same without any interruption.

What are the benefits of ADSL?

There are many benefits but the main ones are:
    • Speed - much faster than a dial-up connection.
    • Convenience - no dialing in and no local call costs
    • Always on - ADSL access is there as soon as your computer is turned on
    • Share a normal telephone line
    • Savings - save on line rentals and telephone costs

    Where will ADSL be available?

    A. DSL@internetGhana would be available in the Accra-Tema metropolis, Kumasi and Takoradi, and the rollout into all areas continues. To check if your area/exchange is ADSL-enabled try our availability link.
Do phone calls affect the bandwidth?
No. As voice communications on the telephone line operate at frequencies below 4KHz, and all other services, such as ADSL, use the frequencies above that, the bandwidth available to ADSL is not affected.
Will all my telephone features work with ADSL?
Your telephone features will work as normal. Your telephone line needs to be a straight-line service without any ADSL incompatible equipment. InternetGhana technicians would test your line to confirm compatibility.
What is the difference between static and dynamic IP addressing?

Computers use IP addresses to locate and talk to each other on the Internet, much the same way people use phone numbers to locate and talk to one another on the telephone.

When the Internet was first conceived, the architects didn't foresee the need for an unlimited number of IP addresses. Consequently, there are not enough IP numbers to go around.

To get around that problem, Internet Service Providers, temporarily assign you an IP address from a pool of IP addresses. The temporary IP address is called a dynamic IP address. This number will be different each time you connect to the Internet.

A static IP is a number that is assigned to you by InternetGhana to be your permanent address on the Internet. This number will not change as long as you are with DSL@InternetGhana service.

Why is a static IP a good idea?

    A. Your IP address is always the same allowing you to set up your own servers. For example, this means that you could host your own website, or run your own mail servers.

InternetGhana is operating the skyburst system at a licensed portion of the Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum and therefore does not envisage service interruption as a result of interference. Also, the Navini system, on which the skyburst service operates, has a built-in advanced digital processing algorithm that effectively allows the Skyburst system to operate in the presence of interfering signals.

    Security Overview for Navini System:

The Navini System provides a "layer" approach to security. The system has, first, a network shared keyed identification that only the Base Station and Operator-authorized modems are aware of. Modems will only attempt registration to authorized Operator Base Stations. The second layer is modem authentication. At the time of registration every modem must be autheniticated by the Element Managment System.

In addition, the system supports Layer 3 controls for IP addressing, IP Broadcasting (ARP),and ICMP. For the application layer, the system also supports VPN and/or IPSEC transparently.

Yes. When you install Ripwave Monitor software, which is used for troubleshooting Modem problems, follow the instructions in the Ripwave Modem User Guide.

Before installing, you should close all other applications on your computer, including Virus scan programs. Not doing so may cause the installation to fail. If a virus scan program is active, it can cause problems with the loading of Ripwave Monitor (also called NAVMON), and other processes can be affected. It is also recommended that the latest service pack for the computer Operating System (OS) be loaded. Check your computer against the Minimum System Requirements section of the Ripwave Modem User Guide.Once you have successfully installed Ripwave Monitor or Navini Diagnostics, it is safe to turn on the anti-virus program or other programs. This will happen automatically
