The
CEO of InternetGhana, Mr. Leslie Tamakloe delivered
a speech at a program organized by the Rotary Club of
Accra West. The program which took place at the Golden
Tulip Hotel in Accra was attended by the Accra West
and foreign members of the Rotary Club.
His
Topic was: THE ROLE OF ICT IN LITERACY
PROMOTION IN GHANA
In
his speech, the CEO said “Clearly, the intellectual
work for the roll of ICT in literacy promotion has been
done in Ghana and competently so”
He further states that “ICT gives us digital tools,
powerful computers, more powerful than the NASA Computers
that landed Americans on the moon, with digital audiovisual
and interactive capabilities; ICT also gives us ability
to repeat a good thing forever. That inspiring Maths
teacher in class 6, that inspired you to study science,
can be captured digitally, in videos, voice, character
and in doing so inspire millions more.
Whether
it was ICT that gave birth to the Information Age, or
the Age became so, due to ICT advances, is not important
for Ghana in 2006. What is clear though is that in the
Information Age, the cost of access to information collapsed.
Access to any information except perhaps Nuclear Warhead
Technology, are easy to obtain mostly online on the
Internet. He said, we as Ghanaians have not been able
to harness these ICT tools in this Information Age to
collapse the cost of access to information and eradicate
illiteracy amongst our people”
He
stressed that, if ICT can reduce the cost of education
to a DC Rom or DVD, multiplied by 20 million Ghanaians,
it would only cost 6 billion cedis, and surely we would
be on the way to promoting literacy in Ghana. He was
later presented with certificates and other valuable
documents from the Rotary Club of Accra West.
